You throw in a gentleman and that number becomes 9 or 10. Scenario 1: You are researching a technology that takes 11 turns or so to research. I think the best way for using gentleman its for research.stealing research takes a lot of time and if the college or university youre trying to steal technology from has one or more gentleman you will fail.the first thing you shoudl do is using your gentleman to research technology that jsut takes 2 or 3 turns.they will get skill, then you go to a rival nation *use nations with high enlightment prestige they are the ones that have more technologies* and since your gentleman's skill has grown over a few turns you can challenge to a duel the rival gentleman once the rival college agent stack its empty its fairly easy to steal technologies and your gentleman's skill will increase.I'm not so sure it takes "a lot of time," though I agree with you about the duel thing. But in the beginning of the game I imagine it is a lot more effective to steal with them. So, with this info in mind, why put gentlemen in your own universities? I suppose the only reason is if your technology is so advanced that you have no choice to develop it yourself. At any rate, you will spawn another one shortly. And I suppose they can be killed, though I have not personally seen this happen. The drawbacks? You have to keep reassigning them every time they get caught. This is because you are now "researching" twice as many technologies in the same number of turns, if you have one gentleman for every university. So, gentlemen can either improve the rate at which your universities research by a small factor, or they can functionally serve as universities themselves and actually double your research time. However, put in another university, the average gentlemen can successfully steal a medium-high technology in, at the most, 10 turns. Has anyone noticed that it seems a lot more prudent to use gentlemen to steal other nations' technology than to use them to speed up research?įrom my rough observation, the average gentlemen speeds up your own research by a turn or so.
